The safari
The northern circuit done at the pace it deserves. Four parks, each completely different from the last, with enough time in the Serengeti to stop chasing sightings and start noticing how the place works.
Tarangire for elephants and baobabs. Lake Manyara for forest, flamingos and the chance of lions in the trees. Two full days in the Serengeti. Then the Ngorongoro Crater to finish.
This is the trip we recommend to anyone who has the time for it. The extra two days over the short version are the difference between seeing northern Tanzania and understanding it.
Priced per person on enquiry, based on your dates, group size and choice of accommodation.
Day by day
Depart Arusha mid morning for Tarangire National Park, about two hours south west. Afternoon game drive along the Tarangire River, which in the dry months draws the largest elephant concentrations in northern Tanzania. The park is also the best place on the circuit for baobabs and for birds.
Morning game drive in Tarangire, then transfer to Lake Manyara National Park. Afternoon in Manyara: the park begins in dense groundwater forest full of baboons and blue monkeys, opens into woodland where elephant and buffalo move, and ends at the lake shore where flamingos and pelicans gather. Manyara is where lions are occasionally seen resting in the acacias. Evening transfer up to Karatu.
After breakfast we drive up through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint, and continue across the Conservation Area onto the Serengeti plains, entering at Naabi Hill Gate. Game driving through the afternoon as we work north to the central Seronera area.
A full day in the Serengeti, with an early departure and a picnic lunch in the bush. The Seronera valley holds resident lion prides, leopard along the river courses and cheetah on the open grass. Between December and March we work the southern plains toward Ndutu where the herds calve. Between July and October we can arrange to push north toward the Mara River crossings, which requires an extra night and is quoted separately.
An optional balloon safari at dawn, launching before sunrise and landing to a breakfast set out in the bush. Quoted separately. For those not flying, an early morning game drive. Afterwards we leave the Serengeti, crossing back through the Conservation Area and climbing to the crater rim in the late afternoon.
Early breakfast and descent into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full morning on the floor. Lerai forest, Lake Magadi, the Munge stream and the short grass plains where black rhino are most reliably seen. Picnic lunch at the hippo pool, then the ascent and the drive back to Arusha, arriving early evening. Drop off at your hotel or at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Meal key: B breakfast, L lunch, D dinner.
Accommodation
Every safari is quoted at one of three levels, and you can mix them across a single trip. We will name the exact camps in your quotation, chosen for your route and your dates.

Serviced campsites inside or beside the parks. Dome tents, camp beds, a cook travelling with the group. The most affordable way to sleep inside a national park.

Permanent tented camps and lodges with ensuite bathrooms, hot water and full board. The option most guests choose.

Premium lodges and small tented camps in prime locations, with a higher level of service, space and privacy.
This safari works all year. June to October is the dry season, when the grass is short, the animals gather at water and the roads are easy. January to March brings the calving season to the southern plains and is the best time for predator activity. The long rains in April and May make the tracks harder and some camps close, but the parks are green and empty and the light is extraordinary. Tarangire is at its most dramatic between July and October, when the river is the only water for a long distance and the elephant herds concentrate on it.
