Rubondo Island sits in the southwestern corner of Lake Victoria and is one of the least visited national parks in Tanzania. It is forested, surrounded by water, and home to a population of chimpanzees that were released here decades ago and have since gone fully wild.
There are almost no other visitors. You can walk, track chimpanzees, fish for Nile perch, and move around by boat. Sitatunga, the swamp dwelling antelope that is difficult to see anywhere else, are relatively common here.
It is a specialist destination that needs building into a longer trip rather than squeezed into a northern circuit itinerary.
